Motherhood sets opening weekend all time low
According to reports Uma Thurmans’ new film Motherhood sold only 11 tickets in its first weekend, making it the worst opening weekend in UK history.
The film all about motherhood (I guess) got it’s US release back in October of last year and even in its country of origin the movie flopped, bringing in a mere $40,000. The budget was $5 million by the way.
To improve on this the marketing boffins of Hollywood decided to give the film a ‘limited release’ in the UK applying all the now standardized independent style marketing strategies. However the ‘buzz’ didn’t spread, the reviews were not glowing and the awards definitely didn’t come flying in at Sundance.
So how do you solve a problem like an awful Independent film? Well you can’t, if its bad, if it doesn’t receive the cultural recognition it needs then not a soul will go see the film. Or just 11 will, whatever.
But interestingly all is not lost, because the film is so bad and due to the fact that only 11 people in Britain saw it the moive has raised discussion and strangely people will go see it just to see how crap it is. Was this the marketers intention, no, obviously not, but as many cultural analysis have said before…any publicity is good publicity.
