Film4 Frightfest

Over the bank holiday weekend if you go down to Leicester Square’s Empire Cinema you are for a big surprise.

Frightfest is celebrating it’s 10th birthday since humble beginnings at the Prince Charles Cinema. This year, like previous years, has many exclusive premiers and previews. Sadly, i’ll be out of the country when the event occurs but if I was around, here is my top 5 of what I’d catch and see.

5.  Amer

Preview of the Italian horror. This film, which has barley any dialogue, has split audiences in half. Which side will you end on? Is it style over substance? There’s only one way to find out.

4.  A pub quiz with Andy Nyman

Andy Nyman, an actor who is currently starring on stage in ‘Ghost Stories’, presents the Frightfest horror quiz. Do you know everything about horror films? Well, why not battle it out amongst over horror fans. This event is also accompanied by a short film showcase.

3.  I Spit On Your Grave

The European premier for this remake about a girl who takes revenge on a gang that rape her. Basically it’s a film where men will be tortured in very gory ways. Perfect for a horror festival.

2.  Q+A with Tobe Hooper

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ retains it’s title of the scariest thing put to screen in my mind. Nothing is more terrifying. The festival will be screening this with Hooper’s debut ‘Eggshells’ preceding it.  The horror icon will then spend 45 minutes answering your questions.

1. Monsters

Following on in the footsteps of films such as ‘District 9′ or ‘Kick-Ass’, i.e. films that are standing up to Hollywood standard but for the fraction of the price. ‘Monsters’ takes a new look at the giant monster genre which could be a refreshing twist it needs. Catch it’s first UK showing at the event.

Any more details on the event can be found here http://www.frightfest.co.uk/index.html

Angelina Jolie: The director?

The Actress, who won an Oscar for Girl Interrupted, is set to try her hand at directing and writing…

The film is set in Budapest, Hungary and is will be a love story set in the 1990′s.

It seems like an interesting career move for Angelina and lets hope it is a good one. Hollywood lacks female directors and it will be interesting to see how her celebrity status will be used to market the film, we do not want to see the artistic integrity of her piece to be compromised by her persona in the public eye. It will also be intriguing  to see if she can open the door for female actresses-cum-directors to expand upon their careers in the same vain as male actors, such as Clint Eastwood, have.
